What Are Dental Veneers?

Typically crafted from porcelain, dental veneers are designed to adhere to the front-facing surface of your teeth. Although they are only about the width of a fingernail, they can effectively conceal a wide range of imperfections, including gaps, chips, and stains. Since each veneer is custom-made just for you, you also have complete control over how subtle or dramatic the final result is!

The Process of Getting Veneers

The very first step of the entire veneers process is your consultation with Dr. Daaboul. At this appointment, he will determine if you’re a candidate by conducting a thorough oral exam and learning all about your smile goals. If you are, then the process of creating your custom treatment plan will begin! In addition to selecting the ideal shape and size, he will remove a sliver of your enamel and take impressions of your teeth.

While the lab artisans are crafting your final veneers, we’ll provide you with a temporary set. Although you’ll have to adjust your diet in the meantime, you’ll also get to “test drive” your new smile! As soon as we receive your veneers, we’ll call you in for your final appointment, which is when we will bond them securely in place and give you helpful tips on how to maintain them.

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Many patients near Grapevine wonder whether veneers are removable and intended to be frequently taken out and reinserted, like dentures. However, these porcelain shells are typically not intended to be taken off once they’re cemented in place, except by a qualified professional, such as Dr. Daaboul.

With that said, this treatment requires that some of your enamel be removed to fit correctly. This protective outer layer doesn’t regenerate, meaning this treatment involves making an irreversible change to the structure of your teeth. You’ll need to have veneers in place moving forward to prevent potential damage.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

Veneers are incredibly durable and can even resist a certain amount of chipping and stains, leading some people to believe that they can fully shield their teeth from harm. However, these restorations only cover the fronts of your teeth, so they’re still susceptible to disease and decay.

Thankfully, many common oral issues can be prevented by brushing and flossing twice daily to remove plaque and bacteria that cause oral health problems, which could potentially interfere with your recent cosmetic upgrade. For example, your veneers can’t get cavities, but if the underlying teeth do, they can be destabilized or dislodged.

Are There Dietary Restrictions for Veneers?

These hard shells are incredibly resilient, but that doesn’t mean they’re completely invincible. Eating too many hard, crunchy, or sticky foods could potentially injure them or push or yank them out of place. As a result, you may want to steer clear of crusty breads, raw fruits and veggies, and popcorn or other seedy snacks.

You may also want to avoid darkly pigmented foods, such as coffee, tea, tomatoes, and berries, which can stain your enamel more quickly than your veneers, potentially causing uneven discoloration. Furthermore, alcoholic drinks can potentially dissolve the cement holding your restorations in place, so you might consider minimizing your consumption.

Do Veneers Cause a Lisp?

These shells are incredibly thin, but they do have their own dimensions, and it can take your mouth a few weeks to fully acclimate to their presence. Some patients develop certain speech impediments during this time, such as a lisp or slur, especially regarding “s”, “v” or “th” sounds.

This usually resolves itself with enough time and patience, though you can also practice enunciating certain words until you feel more confident pronouncing them. If the problem persists, please contact us so we can assist you further. For instance, we may be able to thin your veneer slightly to help.
