The Most Common Dental Emergencies

Tooth Extractions

When you have a damaged or infected tooth, we will consider ways to treat the problem that will also let you keep your natural smile intact. Sometimes, though, the only way to protect your oral health is to have the tooth in question removed. Rest assured that at our dental office, a tooth extraction will only ever be recommended as a last resort. That said, if a tooth does need to go, we’ll make sure that you’re fully informed about your replacement options.

Understanding the Cost of Emergency Dentistry

Since dental emergencies usually happen unexpectedly (and at the most inconvenient time), many patients have questions and concerns about the cost. Rest assured, we will provide you with an estimate of the price before providing any restorative or cosmetic care. We will also review the different financial solutions available, including our wellness plans. If you would like to learn more on the topic in the meantime, you can read on, too!

Why Every Dental Emergency is Different

While one patient might schedule an appointment with our emergency dentist in Grapevine because there is a small crack in their enamel, the next one may come in because they knocked out a tooth. Even two patients who visit us because they are struggling with a painful toothache may need two completely different treatments to address the root of the problem. For all of those reasons, there isn’t a flat fee for emergency dentistry.

With all of that said, you don’t have to worry – we won’t leave you in the dark about something as important as the cost. As soon as we complete a comprehensive oral exam and determine the severity of the damage, we will review your treatment options, create your custom treatment plan, and provide you with an estimate of the cost.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Emergencies?

Oftentimes, yes. So, if you are insured, take the time to familiarize yourself with your plan. If you don’t have time because you’re rushing to our office, that’s okay – we can help! Since we welcome most PPO dental insurance plans, we can review your coverage, provide you with an estimate of your out-of-pocket expenses, and file the claims on your behalf. That way, you can focus solely on getting the dental care you need.

Other Options for Making Dental Emergencies Affordable

If you don’t have dental insurance at the moment, then ask us about the other financial solutions that are available at our office, including:

  • Flexible Financing – With CareCredit, a trusted third-party financier, you can space out the cost of your treatment into smaller chunks that fit comfortably in your budget.
  • Special Offers – Throughout the year, we have promotions, like a new patient exam and X-ray for $77. For further details, give us a call or ask a friendly member of our team during your visit.
  • Wellness Plans – Joining comes with several cost-saving perks, including one emergency exam and X-ray per year. Plus, there isn’t any red tape, like waiting periods.

How Taking Care Of Your Smile Can Save You Money

All too often, patients forget the importance of healthy habits, like brushing twice a day and coming to our office for a checkup and cleaning twice a year. The truth is that even the practices that seem relatively minor can play a big role in protecting your smile. So, it’s important that you make them a priority.

Important reminder: If you start to notice anything unusual, like persistent sensitivity, call us right away to schedule an appointment. That way, we can pinpoint and treat the root of the problem before it gets any worse.

Toothaches

Is My Toothache a Dental Emergency? Whether you’re experiencing dull, persistent discomfort or a sharp, stabbing pain, the next step is the same: call our Grapevine dental office. The sooner you do, the sooner we can determine if a same-day visit to our office is necessary and, if it isn’t, guide you through how to handle your toothache in the meantime.

How You Should Handle a Toothache Outside of calling us, we recommend rinsing periodically with warm saltwater, using a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time, and not chewing on that side of your mouth. You can also take OTC pain medication. Just make sure not to take more than directed!

How We Treat Toothaches There are a few ways we can restore the look, health, and function of your tooth while also alleviating any abnormal symptoms you’re experiencing in the short and long term. Ultimately, the treatment we recommend will depend on your unique dental needs, including what was causing your toothache.

Chipped Tooth

Is a Chipped Tooth a Dental Emergency? Very minor chips don’t usually warrant emergency dental care. That said, if you’re struggling with sensitivity and soreness or you simply don’t feel confident with your smile now, don’t hesitate to call us so we can schedule an appointment ASAP.

How You Should Handle a Chipped Tooth There are a few steps we recommend taking, starting with using clean, room-temperature water to gently rinse your mouth. Then, use dental wax or sugar-free gum to cover the tooth, preventing soft tissue irritation and cuts in the process. Last, but certainly not least, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.

How We Treat Chipped Teeth Both cosmetic dental bonding and veneers can restore the missing structure of your tooth. The one we recommend for you will depend on important factors like the size of the chip and your budget. Rest assured, we’ll be here to answer any questions you have so you can feel confident deciding which one is best for you.

Cracked Tooth

Is a Cracked Tooth a Dental Emergency? A cracked tooth does warrant an emergency visit, especially if the damage is severe enough that you’re experiencing considerable discomfort, soreness, and sensitivity. So, don’t wait – call us ASAP so we can schedule an appointment for you with our emergency dentist in Grapevine, Dr. Jason Daaboul.

How You Should Handle a Cracked Tooth Basically, you need to avoid doing anything that can damage your tooth further, like chewing on that side of your mouth. Simultaneously, rinse with clean, room-temperature water and take OTC pain medication to help prevent an infection as well as alleviate any discomfort you’re experiencing.

How We Treat Cracked Teeth Sometimes, the solution is as simple as covering the damaged tooth with a dental crown. Other times, the tooth cannot be saved, requiring us to extract it. If that’s the case, then we will also discuss your tooth-replacement options, like a dental bridge or implant.

Very Sensitive Teeth

Are Very Sensitive Teeth a Dental Emergency? Dental sensitivity doesn’t immediately warrant an emergency visit, especially if you’ve always struggled with it. That said, you shouldn’t hesitate to schedule an exam with Dr. Daaboul if the sensation is new, it’s getting worse, or you’re experiencing several warning signs of trouble, including pain when biting down.

How You Should Handle Very Sensitive Teeth There are a few steps we recommend taking in addition to scheduling an appointment with us, including not eating anything hot or drinking anything cold. You should also switch to a desensitizing toothpaste to avoid exacerbating your symptoms in the meantime.

How We Treat Very Sensitive Teeth First, we need to conduct a comprehensive oral exam to determine what the root of the problem is. If it’s a cavity, then a dental filling or crown may be the answer. If it’s an infection in your gums, then gum disease treatment will likely be needed instead.

Is My Knocked-Out Tooth a Dental Emergency? Yes! In fact, there’s only a 60-minute window of time when saving your tooth is possible. So, it’s important that you call our Grapevine dental office ASAP so we can schedule an emergency appointment.

How You Should Handle a Knocked-Out Tooth In addition to calling us, we recommend doing what you can to save your tooth. Then, place it back in its socket or put it in a clean container filled with milk to preserve the root surface cells.

How We Treat Knocked-Out Teeth Our goal is to save your tooth – always. If we can’t because it wasn’t recovered or it was badly damaged, then we will discuss your tooth-replacement options, including a custom dental bridge or implant.

Outside of that, use clean, room-temperature water to rinse your mouth periodically, store your restoration somewhere safe, and take OTC pain medication as directed.

How We Treat Lost Fillings or Crowns One way we can restore the look, health, and function of your tooth is by securing a new dental filling or crown in place. There are some cases where we recommend a different approach, like re-cementing your existing dental crown back in place if it’s in good condition. Ultimately, the treatment we recommend will depend on your unique dental needs!
