Invisalign has become one of the most popular orthodontic treatments for straightening teeth. These clear aligners offer a discreet and convenient alternative to traditional braces, making them especially appealing for adults and teens. While Invisalign is considered safe and effective for many patients, like any dental treatment, there can be a few potential complications.
Understanding these possibilities can help patients prepare for treatment and ensure the best possible results.
Mild Discomfort or Pressure
It’s common for patients to experience some mild discomfort when they first start wearing Invisalign or when they switch to a new set of aligners. This happens because the aligners are applying gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions.
The sensation is usually temporary and tends to fade after a few days as the mouth adjusts. Over-the-counter pain relievers and switching to new aligners at night can help make this transition more comfortable.
Speech Changes at First
Some patients notice a slight change in their speech when they begin wearing Invisalign aligners. Because the aligners cover the teeth, it may take a short time for the tongue and mouth to adjust.
This might cause a mild lisp for a few days or weeks. Fortunately, most people adapt quickly, and normal speech typically returns once the mouth becomes accustomed to the aligners.
Practicing speaking, reading aloud, or having conversations while wearing the aligners can help speed up the adjustment period.
Irritation or Soreness
Although Invisalign aligners are made from smooth plastic, some patients may experience minor irritation on the inside of the cheeks or lips. This can occur if the edges of the aligners rub against soft tissues in the mouth.
In many cases, this irritation improves as the mouth adjusts. If the edges feel rough or uncomfortable, a dentist may be able to smooth or adjust them.
Maintaining proper oral hygiene and keeping aligners clean can also help reduce irritation.
Treatment Delays from Inconsistent Wear
One of the most important factors for successful Invisalign treatment is wearing the aligners consistently. Most patients are advised to wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day.
If aligners are removed too often or worn for shorter periods, teeth may not move as planned. This can lead to delays in treatment or the need for additional aligners to achieve the desired results.
Following your dentist’s instructions carefully is the best way to keep treatment on schedule.
While minor complications can occur, Invisalign is generally a very safe and effective orthodontic option. Most issues are temporary and can be easily managed with proper guidance from your dental professional. Regular checkups allow your dentist to monitor your progress and make adjustments if necessary.
